Who Is Addicted to Video Games?

I want to say a few things about the WHO classification of gaming addiction.

This issue is part of a new revision for the International Classification of Diseases; They did not just decide to classify gaming as an addiction on its own.

As part of the ICD, gaming is listed under the “addictions” section. They did not just list GAMING ADDICTION as its own issue.

The classification is actually very moderate. It reads:

“…increasing priority is given to gaming to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other life interests and daily activities, and the continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences…”

and

“…normally evident over a period of at least 12 months in order for a diagnosis to be assigned…”.

So first of all, stop with the automatic defensive reaction.

That been said… In this same ICD revision, it is the first time that Transgender was removed from the list of mental disorders. Also remember that until about 20 years ago, Homosexuality was also classified as a mental disorder. This to say that ICD classification is not the end all be all.

Some people use the WHO as an excuse for their uninformed, bigoted opinions. Like with homosexuality and Transgender, people look for the WHO’s carcinogens classification to make idiotic arguments, based on, at best, partial information.

The bottom line is, as far as I’m concerned, that while the WHO classification is by itself mostly benign, it will be used as a weapon by people trying to bash the gaming hobby and the gaming industry.
